Dr. Barry F. Atlas

Practicing ophthalmology since 1978, Dr. Barry Atlas has witnessed considerable advancements in treatments and vision correction techniques and has been instrumental in introducing these revolutionary developments to Southeastern Virginia.

Dr. Barry Atlas, one of the founding physicians, is an extensively trained, board certified eye doctor. People travel to our Chesapeake and Hampton Roads area locations seeking out Dr. Atlas’s skill and expertise. He has completed rigorous fellowships in vision correction, corneal treatments, and cataract implant procedures. Dr. Barry Atlas also maintains dual board certifications with the American Board of Ophthalmology and the American Board of Eye Surgeons.

As part of his unwavering commitment to the evolving field of ophthalmology, Dr. Barry Atlas is dedicated to the continuing education of physicians. Dr. Atlas is currently an Assistant Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the Eastern Virginia Medical School. He also shares his expertise and valuable experience on the latest vision correction surgeries, small incision cataract techniques, and innovative operating room methods through lecturing and in-office training.

When Dr. Barry Atlas is not busy with his successful practice, he enjoys spending time at the beach with his wife Tammy, a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant, and their three children. Dr. Atlas also unwinds by playing golf, gardening and working on computers.

 

Dr. Wayne DeVantier

A graduate of the prestigious medical school at Georgetown University, eye doctor Dr. Wayne DeVantier provides patients from Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, Portsmouth and other Hampton Roads areas with high quality medical care. After receiving his medical degree, Dr. DeVantier spent two years as a U.S. Navy Flight surgeon at Oceana. Once he completed a residency at Bethesda Naval Hospital, he was transferred to the Naval Hospital at Roosevelt Roads in Puerto Rico, where he served admirably for several years. Dr. DeVantier was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1989 and joined Tidewater Eye soon thereafter.

Dr. DeVantier is a board certified ophthalmologist who practices comprehensive ophthalmology. He maintains special interest in small incision cataract treatments, diabetic eye complications, and other treatment.

When Dr. DeVantier is not caring for his patients, he enjoys spending time with his wife Pam and their two children, Laura and Ross.

 

Dr. J. Tom Edmonds

Dr. J. Tom Edmonds has been practicing in the Hampton Roads area for about ten years. He is a talented eye surgeon who serves patients from Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, the entire Hampton Roads region and beyond. Over the years, Dr. Edmonds has earned a reputation for exceptional surgical skill and achieving a high standard in patient care.

A native Virginian, Dr. Edmonds received an undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia before earning a medical degree from the renowned Eastern Virginia Medical School, where he graduated in the top 5 percent of his class. Dr. Edmonds fine-tuned his surgical skills during an internship at Riverside Hospital, a pre-residency Ophthalmology fellowship at the University of South Carolina, and a residency at Tulane University. He also worked in New Orleans for several years, teaching at the Tulane University School of Medicine while simultaneously building a successful refractive practice.

Dr. J. Tom Edmonds returned to southeast Virginia in 1995 and joined Dr. Atlas in practice. Along with his associates, Dr. Edmonds played an integral role in introducing PRK and vision correction surgeries to Virginia and North Carolina. In 2001, he became one of only five doctors in the state of Virginia to be certified by the highly respected American Board of Eye Surgery.

Dr. J. Tom Edmonds prides himself on providing every patient with attentive, personalized care. Learning from his grandfather and father, who were the only physicians in a small Virginian town, Dr. Edmonds understands the importance of maintaining open communication and trust with each patient. Dr. Edmonds performs every pre-operative workup himself, taking the time to thoroughly explain the procedure, answer any questions, and identify the individual needs of each patient. Dr. Edmonds believes success lies not in volume, but in the quality of his surgical results and the patient’s satisfaction.

Dr. Edmonds currently resides in Virginia Beach with his wife Bebe, who is a practicing dermatologist. They have three girls together and enjoy camping, biking and golfing as a family. He is an active member of his community, serving on the boards of several church and civic organizations. Dr. Edmonds also volunteers his services to cataract patients who cannot afford cataract surgery.

 

Dr. Roger W. Newsom

Dr. Roger Newsom is a board certified eye surgeon in Hampton Roads and a member of the American Board of Ophthalmology. He is especially skilled in cataract and implant treatment techniques and the treatment of other problems. Dr. Newsom also serves as a diplomat on the National Board of Medical Examiners.

Since 1996, Dr. Newsom has used BOTOX® Cosmetic effectively to treat eyelid and facial muscle disorders as well as to smooth away deep wrinkles and lines that naturally form in the eyelid and forehead regions as the face ages.

In addition to his ophthalmic training, Dr. Roger Newsom is qualified to perform plastic surgery on and around the eye and forehead regions for reconstructive and cosmetic enhancement purposes. During his residency at the Wake Forest University Eye Center, Dr. Newsom received the highly coveted American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons Fellowship at the University of Toronto, Canada. During this fellowship, he became proficient in advanced plastic surgery techniques under the guidance of some of the world’s foremost authorities.

Dr. Roger Newsom is a native of the beautiful state of Virginia and currently resides in Hampton Roads with his wife Susan and their four daughters.

 

Dr. Leonard A. Rappaport

Dr. Leonard Rappaport is an extensively trained board certified ophthalmologist with a special interest in cataract surgery methods, as well as the use of lasers, drainage devices and antimetabolites in the surgical treatment of glaucoma. Dr. Rappaport is also an active staff member of the Maryview Medical Center and Harbour View Medical Center.

Dr. Leonard Rappaport studied at some of the most prestigious medical institutions in the country. After receiving his medical degree from George Washington School of Medicine, he completed an internship at the Moutefione Medical Center in New York and a residency at the Mason Institute of Ophthalmology at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Determined to further hone his skills , Dr. Rappaport completed a one-year fellowship in glaucoma treatment at the Glaucoma Associates of New York Eye and Ear Infirmary. Dr. Rappaport brings a high level of expertise and extensive surgical knowledge to our office.

 

Dr. Alison Mercer

Dr. Mercer is a licensed therapeutic optometrist. She was raised in West Virginia and graduated with a B.S. from West Virginia University in 1999. After graduation, she attended Pennsylvania College of Optometry where she received her Doctor of Optometry degree in 2003. Dr. Mercer has been practicing optometry in Chesapeake since receiving her degree. She has extensive training in the treatment of eye disease such as diabetes and glaucoma. She also has training in pediatric and low vision, as well as in prescribing contact lenses. Dr. Mercer is a member of the American Optometric Association, the Virginia Optometric Association and the Tidewater Optometric Association. She resides in Chesapeake with her husband, Chris, a local pharmacist, and their two sons, Matthew and Benjamin.

 

Dr. Mark J. Iacobucci

Dr. Mark J. Iacobucci is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. 

Dr. Iacobucci’s name means Jacob in Italian.  He is from Poquoson, Virginia, where he graduated Valedictorian from Poquoson High School in 1988.  He has a Bachelor of Science degree with highest honors from George Mason University and a Medical Degree with honors from Duke University. He completed an internship at Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, Virginia, and an ophthalmology residency at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  He has advanced training in laser eye surgery from the Cleveland Clinic where he accomplished a one-year fellowship in refractive surgery.  After practicing ophthalmology at Monroe Clinic in Wisconsin and North Carolina Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat in North Carolina, Dr. Iacobucci joined Tidewater Eye Centers, P.C. to be closer to his family in Poquoson. 

While practicing ophthalmology, Dr. Iacobucci has authored numerous publications on the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases and refractive surgery.  Dr. Iacobucci’s specialties include treating cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, rheumatologic disorders of the eyes and refractive surgery.

Dr. Iacobucci, his wife, and their three-year-old son currently reside in Poquoson, Virginia.  In his free time, he enjoys playing guitar, cycling, and fishing with his son.

 

Dr. Mark A. Pavilack

Mark A. Pavilack, M.D. has dedicated his career to Corneal, Cataract, and Laser Eye Surgery.  With over 15 years of clinical practice, Dr. Pavilack has extensive surgery experience and has completed thousands of procedures including cataract, lens implant, corneal transplant, and LASIK Eye Surgeries.  He is a Board-Certified Diplomat of the American Board of Ophthalmology.  He is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.

Dr. Pavilack is a Phi Beta Kappa and High Honors graduate of the University of Florida.  He obtained his medical degree from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine as President of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society in 1987.  He was distinguished as a University of Michigan Resident and in a Corneal Fellowship at the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary of Harvard Medical School.  He has received numerous honors and awards including appointments to the prestigious Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary in Boston, and the Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk.  Dr. Pavilack has authored numerous articles and book chapters, as well as lectured at national and international meetings.  The Research Council of America has recently named Dr. Pavilack among the Top Ophthalmologists in America.  

Dr. Pavilack resides in Virginia Beach with his wife, Ann, and their three children.  In his free time, he enjoys playing tennis and spending time with his family.
