“Vision correction is the best decision I ever made. I only wish I had done it sooner.”
This is a statement we hear over and over again from our vision correction patients. Procedures like LASIK laser vision correction and PRK can be truly life-changing.
How Vision Correction Works
When you have a refractive error (nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism), your cornea is irregularly shaped so light entering the eye does not properly focus on your retina (the back of the eye). Laser vision correction actually changes the shape of the cornea to allow proper focusing. Only a miniscule amount of tissue is removed during the 10-minute process.
Our LASIK Technology: iLASIK
Our doctors utilize advanced blade-free LASIK technology called iLASIK. Many of our patients were told in the past that they were not candidates for this type of vision correction. This technology opens the door for many more people to have LASIK.
The “i” in iLASIK stands for the IntraLase laser that is used to create a corneal flap in the first step of LASIK. Rather than using a hand-held blade to make a corneal incision, this laser makes the entire process blade-free for a more customized, precise and safe procedure.
LASIK Alternative: PRK
Even with our advanced LASIK technology, not everyone is a good candidate for LASIK – especially those with thin corneas or other vision characteristics. After a comprehensive LASIK consultation, our doctors may recommend a different vision correction option: PRK.
This vision correction method does not require the creation of a corneal flap to gain access to the underlying corneal tissue to correct the refractive error. Instead, the outer layer of the cornea is gently removed and the cornea is reshaped just as in LASIK. PRK can produce the same vision results as LASIK; the recovery time is slightly longer (to allow the outer layer of the cornea to regenerate) but it allows patients with thin corneas to experience better vision.
Custom LASIK, Custom PRK
Both iLASIK and PRK procedures at Tidewater Eye Centers are based on CustomVue technology. Our doctors gather a detailed 3D map of your unique cornea prior to the procedure so just the right amount of correction is made. There is never a one-size-fits-all approach to laser vision correction. This produces better vision results for our patients.
