Custom iLASIK in Virginia Beach
We proudly offer custom wavefront iLASIK eye surgery and evaluations at our Hampton Roads locations in Chesapeake and Virginia Beach. Using the advanced VISX® CustomVue™, our surgeons are able to correct visual imperfections with greater accuracy than was ever possible with traditional LASIK. Each person’s vision is like a fingerprint, unique to his or her eye. With traditional iLASIK, the surgeon relies on standardized measurements to guide the laser. Using WaveScan® technology, the VISX® CustomVue™ system projects a detailed map of the cornea’s surface onto a computer screen. The surgeon designs an individualized surgical plan based on the measurements of the image. The customized measurements are transferred to the VISX® STAR S4™ Excimer Laser and guide the laser as it makes the appropriate corrections.
According to the makers of the VISX® CustomVue™ machine, custom iLASIK carries an impressive success rate:
- 100 percent of CustomVue™ patients could see well enough to pass a driver’s test without glasses or contact lenses.
- 98 percent of CustomVue™ patients could see 20/20 or better.
- 70 percent of CustomVue™ patients could see better than 20/20.
Custom wavefront iLASIK eye surgery performed at our Hampton Roads facility in Chesapeake gives our patients the ability to live with renewed energy and a carefree attitude they never thought possible.
How iLASIK Works
We offer iLASIK eye surgery and evaluations at our practice as a way to improve or completely rectify refractive errors.
iLASIK Eye Surgery Procedure
iLASIK is a quick procedure, requiring no more than 15 minutes to complete in most cases. Before surgery, the LASIK surgeon numbs the eye with topical anesthetic eye drops. Using blade-free Intralase technology, the eye surgeon creates a hinged flap on the corneal surface, which he folds back to expose the inner corneal tissue. A computer controlled excimer laser then removes the pre-determined amount of corneal tissue, reshaping the cornea and repairing the refractive error. After the appropriate correction has been made, the surgeon simply returns the flap to its original position. Although some patients report a sensation of pressure, the procedure is painless. Patients will wear a clear eye shield following the surgery to protect the corneal flap from irritation, but no stitches are required because the corneal flap heals without any assistance. Most patients notice improved vision immediately after the procedure. Before iLASIK eye surgery, a surgeon from our Virginia Beach or Chesapeake offices will perform a pre-operative consultation. During this appointment, the surgeon will assess the patient’s refractive error and determine if he or she is a good candidate for the procedures. The surgeon will also design an effective surgical plan. For nearsighted patients, the cornea is made flatter by removing tissue from the center of the cornea. For farsighted patients, the surgeon removes an appropriate amount of tissue from the sides of the cornea, steepening the curvature of the cornea. Astigmatism requires that the oblong surface of the cornea be reshaped into a spherical form. The surgeon accomplishes this by removing more tissue from one side than the other.
We perform hundreds of traditional and custom iLASIK procedures at our facility in Chesapeake, Virginia, each year. In general, this procedure is considered extremely safe and effective; to date, our patients have reported an impressively high satisfaction rate. With the innovative advancements in technology, it continues to evolve into a safer, more effective procedure. Across the country, doctors report complications in less than 1 percent of patients who undergo ocular operations. However, it is important for all candidates to be familiar with the risks associated with this procedure. Below are the most common risks associated with the operation:
- Light sensitivity
- Halos, glare and starbursts
- Irregular problems: this occurs if the cornea’s surface heals unevenly
- Contrast sensitivity: patients may not be able to see as clearly at night
- Flap complications
- Dry Eyes
Fortunately, most side effects will naturally dissipate six months after the procedure. However, if symptoms do persist, many can be corrected with a touch-up procedure.
